This disc, volume two of Deutsche Grammophon's Segovia collection, presents an interesting variety of music mostly from the Hispanic tradition, with the exception of the Italian-born Castelnuovo-Tedesco, and it was originally recorded in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. As the liner notes explain, Torroba, inspired by Segovia's enthusiasm for the guitar, started composing for him in the 1920s

Ponce, Rodrigo, Torroba; Andrés Segovia. Albéniz, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Granados, Tárrega, Torroba; Andrés Segovia. The Segovia Collection, Volume 5: The Legendary Andrés Segovia: Five Centuries of the Spanish Guitar. Milán, Narváez, Sanz, Sor, Torroba, Granados, Mompou; Andrés Segovia.

Segovia's collaborations with 20th century composers such as Manuel Ponce, Federico Torroba, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Federico Mompou are reflected in the discs on this set, as are his reverent performances of the works of early 19th century guitar masters Fernando Sor and Dionisio Aguado. Four discs offer almost five hours of music, over one hour of which appears for the first time on CD, including the Cassado arrangement of the Boccherini cello concerto.

Andrés Segovia Torres, 1st Marquis of Salobreña (21 February 1893 – 2 June 1987), known as Andrés Segovia, was a virtuoso Spanish classical guitarist from Linares, Spain. Many professional classical guitarists today were students of Segovia, or students of his students. Segovia's contribution to the modern-romantic repertoire not only included commissions but also his own transcriptions of classical or baroque works

The Segovia Collection draws from the extensive catalog the Spanish guitarist recorded for American Decca in the 1950s and 1960s and focuses on two important areas in Segovia's repertoire: Spanish works, including many pieces dedicated to him, and works by Johann Sebastian Bach.
