Kaleidoscope is the debut studio album by American singer Kelis. It was released on December 7, 1999 by Virgin Records, and was produced entirely by The Neptunes. Despite underperforming in the United States, the album saw mild success in certain international markets, including the United Kingdom, where it charted at number 43 and was certified gold. Kaleidoscope peaked at number 144 on the Billboard 200, and as of November 2006, it had sold 249,000 copies in the United States.

Kaleidoscope starts out strongly enough with standouts such as "Caught out There," "Get Along with You," and "In the Morning. Sadly enough, the focus seems to lose its footing midway and from there on out, the remaining songs run from average to good. As an artist who could become, with the proper guidance, a prominent figure for years to come, Kelis is one not to dismiss.

With Kaleidoscope, Kelis appeared as if from outer space with her shock of brightly coloured hair and sang with experience seemingly beyond her years. The Intro sends up the autobiographical skits of the era: we hear a minute or so of nostalgic mumbo jumbo, when she cuts in with, Yeah, yeah, and now I’m grown up. Kelis retains this sassy forthright attitude throughout the album

The many moods of Kelis only begin with the hissy fit she's gone pop with (which, I should mention, is about as riot-grrrl as Gwen Stefani on a bad hair day). She stands by her man, reasons with her man, lies for her man, watches TV alongside her man, loads his gun, fucks him in the window, hopes he misses his damn plane.

Kaleidoscope was the album that made Kelis huge in the rest of the world, an album full of love, hate, fear and intensity. The album draws an almost obvious comparison to Kelis’ now husband Nas, taking his taste for telling the deep, dark life of a lower class black male and telling it from the point of, well, the wife of a lower class black male. What a cute couple they make.
