Liner Notes: Heart Sounds Stephen Ettinger, . M The Normal Heart Sound band 1 The thorax is auscultated systematically by valve area. The aortic valve is just dorsal to and slightly caudal to the pulmonic valve at the middle third of the thorax.

Heart sounds are the noises generated by the beating heart and the resultant flow of blood through it. Specifically, the sounds reflect the turbulence created when the heart valves snap shut. In cardiac auscultation, an examiner may use a stethoscope to listen for these unique and distinct sounds that provide important auditory data regarding the condition of the heart.

Heart Sounds Introduction. Pediatrics: When To Refer. This is a normal first and second heart sound at 60 beats per minute. You are auscultating at the Mitral valve area (Apex). The first heart sound has slightly greater intensity than the second heart sound. The first heart sound is produced by the closing of the mitral and tricuspid valve leaflets. The second heart sound is produced by the closing of the aortic and pulmonic valve leaflets. The second heart sound is unsplit when the subject is holding his or her breath at peak expiration.
