In the American Old West overland trails were popular means of travel used by pioneers and immigrants throughout the 19th century and especially between 1830 and 1870 as an alternative to sea and railroad transport. These immigrants began to settle North America west of the Great Plains as part of the mass overland migrations of the mid-19th century. The Mormon Trail was used for more than 20 years after the Mormons used it and has been reserved for sightseeing. The initial movement of the Mormons from Nauvoo, Illinois to the Valley of the Great Salt Lake occurred in two segments: one in 1846 and one in 1847. The first segment, across Iowa to the Missouri River, covered around 265 miles. The second segment, from the Missouri River to the Valley of the Great Salt Lake, covered about 1,032 miles.
The Mormon Pioneers moved west on the Mormon trail between 1845 and 1870, when the train came through and became the more common mode of transportation. The biggest years for travel on the Mormon trail were in the 1850's. After the railroad, Mormons continued to move west, but usually came individually as the need for organized companies no longer existed, so the numbers are harder to pinpoint.
The Mormon Trail or Mormon Pioneer Trail is the 1,300-mile (2,092 km) route that members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints traveled from 1846 to 1868. Therefore, an irrigation system was designed and the land was flooded before plowing, and the resulting system provided supplemental moisture during the year. Just west of Lewis, the 1846 emigrants passed a Potawatomi encampment on the Nishnabotna River
The Mormons went west for religious reasons. They belonged to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The Mormons lived in close communities, worked hard, and prospered. Some people reacted angrily to the Mormon teachings, especially to the practice of polygamy. This practice allows a man to have more than one wife at a time.

A typical sunset on the trail west of Sugar Creek. Here, six miles west of the Mississippi shore at Montrose, Iowa, the pioneers made their staging ground in an area formerly part of the Ambrosia Branch of the Zarahemla Iowa Stake. Missionaries, Mormons, and others. The first missionary group to the West left Independence in 1834. Led by Jason Lee, its members joined a party headed by New England merchant Nathaniel Wyeth. They largely followed the Platte River. Topography and climate largely dictated the course of the Oregon Trail. Also crucial were safe passages through or around the several mountain ranges along the route, the most important of those being the relatively low and gently sloped South Pass over the divide. Even better is we are retooling it to be more like The Oregon Trail, except with bridge building as the challenges. We are making every location a real life location on the Oregon Trail, and adding a lot of educational content about the hardships pioneers faced and also the physics of bridge building. It will turn into a very fun educational experience.
