Tied to a Star will be released on August 25th via Sub Pop and features guest appearances from Cat Power’s Chan Marshall, Black Heart Procession’s Pall Jenkins, Mark Mulcahy and Ken Maiuri from Youngt Chorus. Mascis self-produced the LP, enlisting mixing help from longtime Dinosaur Jr. collaborator John Agnello. J Mascis Grabs Mark Lanegan and Bob Pollard for Sweet Apple LP. You can now listen to the album’s first single Every Morning, a mid-tempo, acoustic-anchored rocker that finds Mascis’ double-tracked vocals paving the way for a typically sticky electric guitar solo.

Mascis released a mostly acoustic album in March 2011 titled Several Shades of Why on Sub Pop Records. He was joined in the studio by several guest musicians, including Kurt Vile, Ben Bridwell and Sophie Trudeau. Mascis toured North America with Vile as support act to promote the album. Tied to a Star doesn’t make it any easier. Again, these are very good songs that bear all the marks of the elder statesman’s voice. And, although they’re not Dinosaur Jr. songs, they’re somehow still quintessentially Mascis in similar ways - even if we’ve never heard him exactly like this before

Mascis does almost all his own stunts, although Ken Miauri (who also appeared on Tied to a Star) plays keyboards and there are a few guest vocal spots.
