Is Star Wars the closest thing to a dud in Wilco's discography? The album's got a great sound-jagged guitar (courtesy Nels Cline), distorted vocals-but a critical shortage of great songs. You Satellite" rules and "Random Name Generator" is formidable enough to make Jeff Tweedy feel like a shapeshifter rock star, but much of the album feels unfinished, like sketches for something that might've been great, a perception that's fairly amplified by the album's brief length and lazy title

Wilco were pretty much baiting the entire internet with the release of their latest album, Star Wars. For one, it’s called Star Wars. Second, it has a kitschy painting of a cat on the cover. And lastly, they released it just slightly past work hours on a Thursday without notice. At 33 minutes long, Wilco balance their mastery over pleasant melodies with their predilection for forays in the unexpected and experimental - something the band had triumphantly returned to on 2011’s The Whole Love. Random Name Generator wages on with the same ferocity as More. Tweedy’s vocals - which confess, I kinda like it when I make you cry every once in a while - are just slightly buried beneath it all, and there they stay, by and large, for the duration of Star Wars. You Satellite sits at the center of the album as the longest track of the set, clocking in at just over five.

After performing Star Wars, Wilco performed another 55 minutes of crowd-pleasers, seemingly as a thank-you to the audience for letting the band indulge in so much new music. I Am Trying To Break Your Heart" remains a jaw-dropping instrumental display, "Impossible Germany" included a devil-horns-worthy guitar solo, and at one point, Tweedy harangued the kids in the crowd for throwing glow sticks during the set. You can't have dad-rock without a dad, I suppose  . Such a dynamic set was tough to follow, and even though they had a whole new album to tout instead of a handful of fresh tracks, Wilco couldn't quite match the high bar set by CHVRCHES.

From the moment guitarist Nels Cline's madcap . emerges on cantankerous instrumental opener "EKG," zany space jams betray no trace of the Chicagoans' al. ountry roots. and playful rocker "Random Name Generator" guarantee festival appeasement, while jovial "The Joke Explained" recalls Summerteeth with its toe-tapped rockabilly.
