We’ve got an exclusive from Van Halen biographer Greg Renoff for VHND toda. ome pretty exciting news! Here it is: The list of Holy Grail archival rarities that Van Halen fans dream of is a long one. Frequently wished-for items include early studio demos, film footage drawn from Van Halen’s 1981 performances in Oakland, and concert recordings from the band’s golden age. But considering that Van Halen has refused to release bonus tracks with their album reissues, much less a box set, the idea that fans would ever get their hands on this kind of rare material seems like a pipe dream

No trem, harmonized overdubbed guitar parts, it's the Gene Simmons Demos (Zero) from late 1976. The Warner Brothers Demos (After Zero) are from around April 1977 and were produced and engineered by Ted Templeman and Don Landee

Gene Simmons recalls the demos he made with Van Halen in the mid-Seventies and discusses when he will release them. Michael Putland/Getty, Fin Costello/Getty. While speaking with Rolling Stone about the 40th anniversary of Kiss’ Destroyer earlier this month, Gene Simmons digressed to reflect on the anniversary of some other recordings he made in 1976: his demos with Van Halen. As for his involvement with Van Halen in the Seventies, Simmons has said previously that he ended up not working with the group after his Kiss bandmates and manager, Bill Aucoin, expressed little interest in his demos. I gave the demo back to the band, told them I had a tour to go on and afterward I would try to get them a record deal, but until then, I tore up our contract and set them free, he said, according to BraveWords. It didn’t take them long to get on Warner Bros. Gene Simmons is looking forward to the death of rap.

Glitter Demos (Unknown date): These are believed by some to be the earliest demos in circulation. They were released via Dave TV on davidleeroth. Based on the age and style of music, these could be Mammoth demos from very early, however, a reliable source has put them as much later in VH's career with "Kicks" possibly being from David Lee Roth's "Crazy From The Heat" sessions. These are in a lossy format since they were released via the Web site, and David Lee Roth has the masters. 11. 79th and Sunset (David Lee Roth 1982 interview with Jim Ladd). 12. Crossroads Blues (Edward Van Halen 1984 Interview with Lisa Robinson). 13. Gonna Take a Lotta Drugs (David Lee Roth and friends unknown date).
