Runnin' with the Devil" is the second single from Van Halen's 1978 eponymous debut album. The song lyrics were inspired by the Ohio Players song "Runnin' from the Devil". In 2009, it was named the 9th greatest hard rock song of all time by VH1. The song begins with a collection of car horns sounding. The horns were taken from the band’s own cars and mounted in a box and powered by two car batteries, with a foot switch. Producer Ted Templeman slowed the horns down before adding them to the track.

Van Halen contains many of Van Halen's signature songs, including "Runnin' with the Devil", the guitar solo "Eruption", their remake of The Kinks hit "You Really Got Me", "Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love", "Jamie's Cryin'", "Feel Your Love Tonight" and their remake of John Brim's "Ice Cream Man". The Van Halen album, like Van Halen's other David Lee Roth-era albums-excepting Van Halen II, which was re-certified in 2004, to coincide with the promotion of a Warner Bros. Records greatest hits collection-was last brought by Warner Bros.

Ain’t Talkin’ ’Bout Love.

Van Halen's self-titled 1978 debut album all but completely re-wrote the vocabulary of rock music. Here's a track-by-track look at how they made the record, and how its influence has been felt over the following decades. Runnin' With the Devil". The first musical sound you hear on Van Halen's debut album isn't Eddie Van Halen's guitar. It's Michael Anthony's bass. And those insanely stratospheric chorus vocals you can't hit on karaoke night aren't coming from David Lee Roth, either. A few weeks before the release of Van Halen, the band was introduced to the world via their cover of the Kinks' "You Really Got M. They had played the song regularly in the bars, and Ted Templeman lobbied for it to be their debut single, even though Eddie said he "would have maybe picked 'Jamie's Cryin,’ just because it was our own.

It's hard to hear anybody else really, even with the traces of their influences, or the cover of "You Really Got Me," which doesn't seem as if it were chosen because of any great love of the Kinks, but rather because that riff got the crowd going. Listen to how "Runnin' with the Devil" opens the record with its mammoth, confident riff and realize that there was no other band that sounded this way - maybe Montrose or Kiss were this far removed from the blues, but they didn't have the down-and-dirty hedonistic vibe that Van Halen did; Aerosmith certainly had that, but they were fueled. by blooze and boogie, concepts that seem alien here.
