Van Halen is the self-titled debut studio album by American hard rock band Van Halen. Released on February 10, 1978, the album peaked at on the Billboard 200. The album became widely recognized as the band's popularity grew, selling more than 10 million copies in the United States by August 7, 1996 and being certified Diamond

Van Halen’s magnificent 1978 self-titled debut album simultaneously rewrote the rules of rock guitar and hard rock in general. It’s one of those rare debut albums - think The Doors, Jimi Hendrix’s Are You Experienced, Led Zeppelin - that simply announces itself. Guitarist Eddie Van Halen redefines what the electric guitar could do, developing a blindingly fast technique with a variety of self-taught two-handed tapping, hammer-ons, pull-offs, and effects

Van Halen emerged again in 2009 with A Different Kind of Truth. The album featured Dave on vocals, and Eddie’s son Wolfgang on bass. Truthfully, it was a decent record, and I loved getting a new Van Halen album, but at the same time it wasn't like the old days. I’m sure they know this. What’s Next for Van Halen? It’s been several years since Van Halen has released an album, and almost a decade since their last studio effort. At least in the interviews I’ve read, Eddie and Alex still seem.

And that's true of all 11 songs here: they're songs designed to get a rise out of the audience, designed to get them to have a good time, and the album still crackles with energy because of it. Sheer visceral force is one thing, but originality is another, and the still-amazing thing about Van Halen is how it sounds like it has no fathers. Plenty other bands followed this template in the '80s, but like all great originals Van Halen doesn't seem to belong to the past and it still sounds like little else, despite generations of copycats.

Van Halen didn’t exist in a vacuum. There was Quiet Riot, A La Carte, The Source, Suite 19 and others. Most of these local bands were friendly towards each other, but competition did exist between them to land the coveted gigs. Ironically, Van Halen was a slow starter – it peaked at N. 17 on Billboard’s Top 200 album chart. But its impact couldn’t be measured in sales figures. Instead, it became the standard by which subsequent hard-rock albums would be measured. It was both touchstone and template for more than one generation of bands that followed, every bit as revolutionary as Are You Experienced?, Led Zeppelin’s debut or the Jeff Beck Group’s Truth album. Today, its sales stand at more than 10 million – second only to Van Halen’s huge crossover album 1984.

I love Van Halen, not Van Hagar. And this isn't confirmed but a rumor is going around that Eddie, Alex, Wolfgang (Eddie's Son), and Dave are joining up for a final hooray and might tour in the summer of 2007 could this be the return of the rock gods, and good music as we know it? Chris from Virginia Beach, VaI can not agree with Carrie about the synths. The album rocks, Jimi rocks, and this album is 10x better than "Van Halen".
