Bleach is the debut studio album by the American rock band Nirvana, released on June 15, 1989 by Sub Pop. The main recording sessions took place at Reciprocal Recording in Seattle, Washington between December 1988 and January 1989. Bleach failed to chart upon its original release, but was well received by critics. The album was re-released internationally by Geffen Records in 1992 following the success of Nirvana's second album, Nevermind (1991).
Released June 15, 1989. Nirvana’s 1989 debut album lived almost exclusively in the underground Seattle circuit until it was plucked out of obscurity following Nirvana’s breakthrough in 1991. This early album is more raw than Nevermind, heavier than In Utero, and features a greater metal influence than Nirvana’s later work. Kurt’s songwriting during this period is marked by a decidedly non-commercial sound, in contrast to the radio-friendliness of Nevermind. About a Girl is one of the few pop-sensible songs on the album. Lyrically, Kurt focuses on dark subject-matter: .
