Emerson, Lake & Palmer is the debut studio album by the English progressive rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer, released in the UK in November 1970 on Island Records (catalog no. ILPS 9132). The album's initial North American release was several weeks later, in January 1971, on Atlantic Records' Cotillion Records subsidiary (catalog no. SD 9040). Recording took place at Advision Studios in July 1970 when the group had yet to perform live, and lasted for three months.
Emerson, Lake and Palmer helped to usher the classical style of progressive rock. When they respectively left The Nice, King Crimson and Atomic Rooster and came together as a trio, finding that their playing styles were complimentary, they created the first progressive rock supergroup. Dominated by Emerson’s neo-classical abilities, The Nice was the first symphonic rock band to adeptly fuse true classical motifs and passages with psychedelic rock and jazz. What works is the lovely Affairs Of The Heart, an acoustic Lake piece written in the late ‘80s with ex-Buggle and Yes man Geoff Downes, which relies solely on guitar and some light piano and strings for accompaniment. Lake‘s closing Footprints In The Snow is similar and also good; though that voice takes some getting used to for longtime fans.

Having liked the "In Concert" album from 1979, I really liked very much this "Works Liive" album. from 1974, "Works Live", in comparison, is a more relaxed album, with some ballads written and sung by Greg Lake and played with the orchestra, and with Keith Emerson playing "Maple Leaf Rag", or with the band playing "Show Me.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Though no one talked about it at the time of its release, this album reflected a growing split within the group. Originally, the trio's members, tired of sublimating their musical identities within the context of ELP, each intended to do a solo album of his own. Reason prevailed, however, probably aided by the group's awareness that the combined sales of the solo albums issued by the five members of Yes the previous year were a fraction of the sales of Yes' most recent records.
First of all, what needs to be said before anything else is that Works Volume 1 is NOT for those who enjoy Emerson, Lake & Palmer's early 70's stuff. This entire album is dominated with London Symphony Orchestra arrangements which paints a completely different picture of the band. It's drastically different from their 1970-74 classic period. With that said, while most of this stuff didn't make an impression on me the first few listens, a good portion of this stuff might eventually grow on you if you're willing to work with it. I can't help but compare Works.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Works, Volume I. Released March 22, 1977 (US) Recorded 1976 Billboard charts UK charts RIAA Gold BPI Gold. Keith Emerson - keyboards, piano Greg Lake - guitar, bass guitar, vocals Carl Palmer - drums, percussion. Works, Volume I' is a double album divided into four major sections, one each highlighting each band member, and one for combined works. It was decided that each would have a solo side followed by a fourth side featuring the band as a unit.
