Cyclone is the eleventh album by Tangerine Dream and the first in their canon to feature proper vocals and lyrics. The mystical lyrics and rock flute of Steve Jolliffe on the first two tracks marked a turn toward progressive rock. The third track, however, is an extended Berlin School instrumental more in the vein of the title track from Stratosfear. The cover is a painting by band leader Edgar Froese that slightly resembles his cover for 1974's Phaedra.
Cyclone (Cass, Album, Unofficial). Cyclone (LP, Album, RP, Gat). He provides wind instruments as well as vocals. It's the vocals that so many people really dislike of this album. But if the results mean the band moved more towards prog rock, to me that's nothing to complain about! "Bent Cold Sidewalk" is prime example what I'm talking about. It sounds like late '70s prog rock, but the piece does also feature their trademark use of sequencers to let you know what band you're listening to. "Rising Runner Missed by Endless Sender" is a more upbeat number, with nice spacy synths and vocals, once again.

A welcome reissue and one that marks an interesting transition in Tangerine Dream's existence - this was the first TD album to incorporate lyrics and vocals (from Steve Jolliffe, who also contributed wind instruments and keyboards). By this point, the nucleus of the band was down to Edgar Froese and Christopher Franke, with the sound centering more on shifting arpeggiation over percussive rhythm structures, with "Madrigal Meridian" being an impressive example of this.
Cyclone is quite notably the first Tangerine Dream album to feature lyrics and vocals. Their move towards more vocal based tracks hurt their reputation in the eyes of loyal fans, who unsurprisingly criticized Cyclone heavily. Another trend that started with Cyclone was their use of rock music's signature string instrument, the guitar. As such Cyclone often feels more like psychedelic rock, similar to Pink Floyd, rather than experimental trance-inducing electronic music. Each track on Cyclone has its own clear and defined identity. Because of this, the album does not flow together like some of Tangerine Dreams prior albums; but when listened to minor details like these do not detract away from the experience. Immediately the change in Tangerine Dream's sound is evident. The intro to Bent Cold Sidewalk features processed electronic vocals.

The singer (Steve Joliffe) employed a style that would have been more appropriate on the Sex Pistols album or a Circle Jerks album than as accompaniment to the symphonic soundscapes of Tangerine Dream. That means he is more often than not out of key (sometimes horribly so) and has a ragged texture to his voice. It really is unfortunate because the three pieces on this album are not all that bad (the first two tracks feature vocals) and the epic (20'28") instrumental Madrigal Meridian stands among Tangerine Dreams finer pieces written during the late 1970s.
