Pamela Zarubica (Zappa's flatmate and "The Voice of Cheese" on Uncle Meat provides Walley with insights denied to biographers working from cuttings. Walley comes from the same generation as Zappa, a vintage cheese himself, his views have maturity and punch. Prose and layout breathe the Mothers of Invention freak surrealism. For a variety of complex reasons, Walley fell out with Zappa, but that merely adds a bracing structural tension
Frankie and Bobby: Growing Up Zappa. Charles Robert Zappa. Format: PaperbackVerified Purchase. Somewhere along the way, I lost my copy of this book that I purchased in the late 70s or early 80s, soon after it's original publication. So I bought this copy to replace the one I'm missing. I suspect someone borrowed it and I never got it back).

No Commercial Potential book. Freak Out was a conceptual masterpiece. Not only was it the first double album set of its kind in the pop music field-it also served as a living testament to L. A. freakdom, a truly honest work. p 60. I whole-earedly agree. Pretty worshipful bio on Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. The worship is buffered by providing us with tons of precious information about Frank's earlier years with more detail than even Zappa dished out in his crummy autobiography. The crap the poor guy went through just for parodying the Beatles makes amazing reading.
A new version of Last. The History and Collected Improvisations of Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention. Overview (current section).
Opening with the nonconformist call to arms "Hungry Freaks, Daddy," Freak Out! quickly posits the Mothers of Invention as the antithesis of teen-idol bands, often with sneering mockeries of the teen-romance songs that had long been rock's commercial stock-in-trade.
It’s high caliber progressive hard rock, fusion, with a bit of classical and humor. The forms are so clear and memorable it’s no wonder the album hit the top 40 in 1975. Quite an achievement for such a left field player as Frank Zappa. But it’s not a sell out. It’s high caliber progressive hard rock, fusion, with a bit of classical and humor, flirting in the pop world. Like the best of Frank Zappa’s efforts there is something here for everyone. And it’s only 42:58 ! Not one minute is wasted. Highlights: Inca Roads. Not only one of Frank Zappa’s most beautiful melodies but contains one of his greatest guitar solos transferred from a live concert in Helsinki to the basic track.
