Kelly At Midnite (LP, Album, Ltd, RE). Vee Jay Records, Vee Jay Records. Wynton Kelly Trio - Skatin' 5:52. Wynton Kelly, Weird Lullaby 7:15.
Only 1 left in stock (more on the way). This 1960 album is Wynton at his best, with the great Paul chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums. Frankly, an a piano trio this group easily competes with the best of them, including anything Red Garland, The Three Sounds or other popular piano trios were recording at the time. Individually, each musician was world class. While some may quibble over which pianist from that era was the top, I think most would agree that Kelly was somewhere in that group, with Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones in an even more solid standing among bassists and drummers. As a drummer this album probably.

The two Vee-Jay sessions compiled on this CD - one led by Paul Chambers and another by Wynton Kelly - were recorded while the bassist and pianist were members of the Miles Davis Quintet. Strong performances on ordinary material make the reissue a worthwhile but not indispensable package, a 1959 set of three Chambers originals and three standards.
