Tales of Kidd Funkadelic is the eighth studio album by the band Funkadelic, released in September 1976 on the Westbound record label. The tracks were outtakes recorded around the same time as Hardcore Jollies and given to Westbound by George Clinton as a contractual obligation.
What you see on Funkadelic album covers is what the band is about: The saber-tooth, slippery tongued & most nastic mau-mau bootybusters of noxious neegrow humpanotical, moldy metal, marching noise music. These guys are no spring chickens - they’ve been playing psychedelic-tinged black music for almost eight years and were an early source of inspiration for Alice Cooper’s stage antics. The title song is Funkadelic at its most excessive: almost 13 minutes of Moog rambling and a sticky mixture of jumbled voices, guitars and congas that sounds like a backing track from an old Night Gallery episode.
The first Funkadelic album not featuring Eddie Hazel, Tales of Kidd Funkadelic finds the band drifting away from hard rock and towards the lackadaisical Martian funk of George Clinton’s more palatable outfit, Parliament. Hastily assembled from outtakes from the Hardcore Jollies sessions, the album lacks the thematic unity that elevates so many of P-Funk’s LPs. Nonetheless, it contains some inspired work.
There were still some fine cuts, but the random element prevented it from being a great album because it lacked the thematic organization and vision Clinton provided for the concept LPs. Track Listing.
