PJ Harvey surprised many last year by bringing out an album so small in scale, so finnicky and chilly, that many critics saw it as a stubborn step back into dilemma by an artist who flourishes there. Once again in A Woman A Man Walked By Parish has provided the settings for Harvey's lyrical and vocal explorations.

A Woman a Man Walked By is the second collaborative studio album English alternative rock musicians PJ Harvey and John Parish, released on 27 March 2009 by Island Records. It is the second collaboration between Harvey and Parish, following 1996's Dance Hall at Louse Point. The album was recorded in Bristol and Dorset, and mixed by Flood. This album is made up of ten new songs.

Bolstered by a wonderfully wayward mixing job by Flood, the album may be short on really memorable tunes but more than makes up for it in restless creativity. Overall it sounds like Harvey and Parish are having a whale of a time making wonky, folk blues pop, filled with rusty tin can moments and poetry.

Polly Harvey, a woman it would be hard to walk by, has reunited with her old friend John Parish, 13 years after their LP Dance Hall at Louse Point. Such working intimacy leads to a musical ease, though not necessarily for the listener. Separately, these musicians are complicated.

A Woman A Man Walked By is an album between and for Harvey and Parish. It sounds like two artists allowing each other to do what they do best and indulge in the moment. Between the dearth of commercial tracks and scattershot sounds, I suspect the album would exist as it is even without any promise of it being released to the public, they’re that committed to the collaboration.

A Woman a Man Walked By arrived just a year and a half after PJ Harvey's equally difficult and brilliant White Chalk. That alone makes it notable, since the last time she released albums in such quick succession was the early to mid-'90s, around the same time of her last songwriting collaboration with John Parish, Dance Hall at Louse Point.
