John's Gumbo is the fifth album by New Orleans singer and pianist Dr. John, a tribute to the music of his native city. The album is a collection of covers of New Orleans classics, played by a major figure in the city's music. It marked the beginning of Dr. John's transition away from the eccentric stage character that earned him a cult following, and toward a more straightforward image based on New Orleans' R&B traditions.

Композиция.

John's Gumbo bridged the gap between post-hippie rock and early rock & roll, blues, and R&B, offering a selection of classic New Orleans R&B, including "Tipitina" and "Junko Partner," updated with a gritty, funky beat. There aren't as many psychedelic flourishes as there were on his first two albums, but the ones that are present enhance his sweeping vision of American roots music. And that sly fusion of styles makes Dr. John's Gumbo one of Dr. John's finest albums.

Charlie Gillett's Most Recent Stories. Wipe your mind clean of all you’ve ever heard and read about Dr. John the Night Tripper. If you knew that once he was a New Orleans session musician and songwriter called Mac Rebennack, forget that too. And although Gumbo (Atco 7006) comes with maybe the best set of liner notes you are ever going to find, don’t look at them. Instead, hand this record to a friend and ask her to find the place in Tipitina (side two, band three) where the first vocal ends and the instrumental break begins, while you go out of the room and wait.

Mos’ Scocious rounds up his first few years on Atlantic and Best Of The Parlophone Years covers his most recent period, but right now, let’s stick to albums as albums. Starting wit. n 1971, Mac Rebennack came out from behind Dr John’s mask to cut an album which, he said, should’ve been called ‘More Gumbo, Less Gris-Gris’. Bookended by the epic title track and the monumental I Walk On Gilded Splinters, with a bunch of enchantingly tricky Mardi Gras dance grooves in between, this is both the ‘Doc’ album prototype (just as Gumbo is the ‘Mac’ album prototype), not to mention being one of the greatest stoner records of all time. Dr John Plays Mac Rebennack. Y’all want the best seat in the house? Guess what – it’s right next to the piano.

Album · 1972 · 12 Songs. After inhabiting his hoodoo-murmuring Night Tripper persona for four albums, Dr. John returned to his roots for a celebratory Mardi Gras revue of timeless New Orleans hits from the '50s. Featuring the great Lee Allen on tenor sax, Gumbo unleashes high-stepping reinterpretations of rollicking Crescent City standards like "Iko Iko" and "Little Liza Jane". He demonstrates his substantial piano mettle on Professor Longhair's "Tipitina" and delivers an authoritative "Junko Partner". John's Gumbo Dr. John.

The fifth album by Dr. John, aka The Night Tripper, is also heralded as his richest album to date. Dr John's Gumbo was released in 1972 and is in many ways a tribute to his hometown New Orleans
