Junkyard is the third studio album by Australian post-punk group The Birthday Party. It has received critical acclaim. Junkyard was inspired by American Southern Gothic imagery, dealing with extreme subjects like an evangelist's murdered daughter. Nick Cave's then-girlfriend Anita Lane co-wrote with him on two songs, "Dead Joe" and "Kiss me Black".

The Birthday Party is what happens when the Stooges self cannibalize after they go through an exorcism. It is the forsaken offspring of Pere Ubu, and Public Image Ltd. with a sprinkle of rock-a-billy, drunk blues, and loose jazz. Don't be fooled with the way these guys dress or by the "post-punk" label. These guys are much dirtier, filthier, and a helluva lot more demented than any of those bands in the genre. The only band with the label of "Post Punk" that is as ferocious as these guys are the Pop Group . The birthday party aren't everyone's cup of tea but they are essential to anyone with an interest in punk or alternative music. I think prayers on fire is a better album, and if you like that album then this one won't disappoint.

The Birthday Party eschewed purity and aesthetics. Theirs was a primal form of expression, a scream bellowed from deep within the soul, a manic form of noise and terror given the gift of melody and rhythm. There is, of course, a perfectly antiquated term for such an ungodly screech: Rock ‘n’ roll. Maybe, more accurately, The Birthday Party were post-America. So for their second album, Junkyard, they mined the depths of twisted Americana, once listing off a series of cultural endorsements in NME that included Morticia Addams, Night of the Hunter, Johnny Cash and Flannery O’Connor. Even the cover art features a hot-rod racing ghoul painted by lowbrow icon Ed Big Daddy Roth.
