You name the new wave synth pop gesture, and Sniper has almost certainly resurrected it somewhere on Blank Dogs' Land and Fixed, a set of moody electronic melodies from the axis where Gary Numan and Martin Hannett meet.

To call the one-man project Blank Dogs prolific is a bit of an understatement. Although Blank Dogs releases have been of the small-potatoes variety (being issued on a number of small independent labels), they have been numerous and critically well received: 2007 saw a number of the project's releases on critical best-of lists, and more was sure to come in 2008, as Blank Dogs had prepared a slate of a dozen releases.

It's a bold step forward, but it doesn't come at the expense of the group's innate wanderlust. If anything, it's helped clarify its eclectic sound. However, the upgrade in fidelity doesn't come without a cost. While the music on Land and Fixed revels in this newfound clarity, the vocals are still processed and manipulated. Where that juxtaposition worked on earlier recordings (when the two sides were still on the same playing field), it doesn't coalesce nearly as well here.

The album only runs at about 40 minutes, which isn't too long. But after awhile, Sniper's seasick, British-inflected vocals can start to wear thin on your nerves. That said, the album contains some killer songs.

These dogs have huge lung capacity for swimming extremely long distances and a thick, oily, and waterproof double coat which protects them from the chill of icy waters. The double coat makes the dog hard to groom, and also causes a lot of shedding to occur. The droopy lips and jowls make the dog drool, especially in high heat. In the water, the dog's massive webbed paws give it maximum propulsion. The swimming stroke is not an ordinary dog paddle. Unlike other dogs, the Newfoundland moves its limbs in a down-and-out motion giving more power to every stroke.
