At first, it's easy to see why the LA-based Whispertown 2000 have the distinction of being the first signings to Gillian Welch's Acony label. This is old-time country-folk played with new wave vigour and optimism and 'Swim' has many moments that are impossible not to love. After a while, though, it's hard to shake off the feeling that here is a whole album of Moe Tucker/Meg White-esque cameos. Sample lyric: "When I'm 105/ Will the trees be alive" etc. Think Gillian for the 'Juno' generation.
This album from the Whispertown 2000, formed by the songwriter Morgan Nagler, comes bearing over-the-top praise from Jenny Lewis and Conor Oberst. "Morgan Nagler is my favourite songwriter. Period," Lewis says, while Oberst likens her songs to old Chinese proverbs.
