Unseen Music Unheard Words. The evocative debut album from Steve Kilbey of iconic Aussie space rockers The Church and writer of the classic 'Under The Milky Way' & Martin Kennedy of ambient instrumentalists All India Radio. Occasionally side projects can be something really spectacular. Steve Kilbey (The Church) and Martin Kennedy (All India Radio) have been working individually in separate cities on a series of songs that bury you in lavish dreamscapes. An enchanting album in the vein of the best work of The Church.
Steve Kilbey & Martin Kennedy Present" (henceforth to be known as KK) is a collaboration album by Steve Kilbey & Martin Kennedy with John Kilbey on backing vocals. Martin wrote the music and Steve wrote the lyrics and sings. The vocals were recorded at JLK’s studio and the album is currently being mixed by Simon Polinski.
Now comes Unseen Music Unheard Words, a collaboration with Martin Kennedy of Australian downtempo outfit All India Radio and Kilbey's brother John. These dozen tracks are appropriately atmospheric and ethereal. Kilbey handles all the vocals, his singular voice revealing more range and emotional depth with each passing year. Along with the expected mysticism and non-sequiturs, Kilbey's lyrics are focused on remembrance and loss while the music is suitably spacious and surprisingly organic-sounding given Kennedy's background. Ahead of her next album, Is It the Kiss, folk artist Ana Egge sweetly ruminates over classic country tales with her new single, "Cocaine Cowboys".
Considering that Unseen Music Unheard Words was written in two distinct phases, it's a remarkably cohesive album. The mood is definitely lighter than on the last album by the Church, Untitled but it's hardly upbeat, plus there is an underlying bleakness in the lyrics that's the most gripping part of the album.
