Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej (pe numele original Gheorghe Gheorghiu) n. 8 noiembrie 1901, Bârlad - d. 19 martie 1965, București; pronunțat în română a fost liderul comunist al României din 1948 până la moartea sa și Președinte al Consiliului de Stat al Republicii Populare Române în perioada 21 martie 1961 - 19 martie 1965. La începutul anilor ’30 a intrat în rândurile Partidului Comunist Român. Este arestat între martie 1933 și august 1944, ca urmare a rolului jucat în organizarea grevei de la Atelierele Grivița din 1933, fiind condamnat în același an la închisoare, începându-și ispășirea pedepsei în închisoarea Doftana. n anul 1936 este ales membru al CC al PCR, devenind lider al facțiunii din închisori a partidului. Având în vedere acest statut de care se bucura, Dej a fost transferat în lagărul de la Târgu Jiu pe perioada celui de-Al Doilea Război Mondial.
