BBC Scottish Symphony OrchestraMax BruchMartyn BrabbinsJack Liebeck. The Romantic Violin Concerto, Volume 17: Violin Concerto no. 3 in D minor, op. 58, Scottish Fantasy in E-flat major, op. 46. октябрь 2014г.

46. Liebeck and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra deliver a solid performance of that extravagantly Romantic take on Scottish folk themes, originally dedicated to Pablo de Sarasate. A strong reason to pick this over the hundreds of other recordings of the Scottish Fantasy, though, is the presence of the almost unknown Violin Concerto No. 58, dedicated to Sarasate's rival, Joseph Joachim. The difference between the Scottish Fantasy and the Violin Concerto No. 3 is the difference between Sarasate and Joachim, ethnic vs. Germanic, colorful vs. structurally ambitious.

Soloist Jack Liebeck and conductor Martyn Brabbins work hard to make the difficult music come alive, writes Andrew Clements. The Second, first performed in London in 1878 with Pablo de Sarasate as soloist, gets occasional outings, but the Third, which Joseph Joachim premiered in 1891, remains a real rarity – as the sleeve note to this recording in Hyperion’s Romantic Violin Concerto series points out, it’s still never been heard at the Proms. While some of its themes have the kind of expressive generosity that runs right through the First, others seem much more foursquare and are underpinned by orchestral writing that is often stolid

Jack Liebeck (violin); BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra/Martyn Brabbins. Catalogue Number: CDA 68055. Backed to the hilt by Martyn Brabbins and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, captured in naturally glowing yet detailed sound, he somehow makes the Konzertstück sound like a masterpiece in full bloom.

The Scottish Fantasy in E flat major, Op 46 (or more correctly ‘Fantasia for the violin with orchestra and harp, freely using Scottish folk melodies’), was written in Berlin during the winter of 1879–80 for Sarasate and reflected the Spaniard’s more colourful personality. Although Bruch never visited Scotland, he was typical of German Romantics in having a fascination with the picture of the country painted by such writers as Walter Scott. Soloist Jack Liebeck and conductor Martyn Brabbins work hard to make the music come alive. Liebeck's playing is consistently fresh and his phrasing always imaginative, but it s a tough ask. They have much more success with the better-known Scottish Fantasy, in which a bit of restraint in the opening sections pays dividends when the big tunes are rolled out towards the close. –Guardian, 23/10/14.

His Bruch concerto series with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Martyn Brabbins has received wide critical acclaim delightful mix of charm and bucolic spirit through Liebeck’s remarkable artistry and imagination (The Telegraph) while his last in the series, Violin Concerto No 2, was released in early 2017. Jack plays the ‘Ex-Wilhelmj’ . Guadagnini dated 1785 and is generously loaned a Joseph Henry bow by Kathron Sturrock in the memory of her late husband Professor David Bennett.
