Live at Woodstock is a posthumous live album by Jimi Hendrix released on July 6, 1999. The album documents most of Hendrix's performance with his band Gypsy Sun and Rainbows at Woodstock Festival on August 18, 1969. Many of the tracks on this album were released in 1994 on Woodstock. As with the earlier release, rhythm guitarist Larry Lee's medley of "Gypsy Woman" with "Aware of Love" (both songs originally by The Impressions) and his "Mastermind" are not included.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience made its first album in 1967. It was called Are You Experienced? When the album was being produced and sold, Hendrix travelled around the UK and some of Europe. On June 4, 1967, The Jimi Hendrix Experience played their last concert in London before going to America The album reached number two in the UK charts. In 2001, VH1 named Are You Experienced as the fifth greatest album of all time

Ironically, in the decades since, the estate has made a deal with Universal Music, which, in turn, also acquired Polydor's parent company, which means that theoretically this compilation could reappear in some form, but that's extremely unlikely as the philosophy behind the reissues of Hendrix's legacy has changed radically since the early '80s).

Taken from shows at Winterland, The Royal Albert Hall, and from various venues in New York, Berkeley, and San Diego, the set includes hits like "Fire," "Voodoo Chile," and "Hey Joe," as well as fine blues like "Red House," "Bleeding Heart," and "Hear My Train a Comin'.

We’re reposting it in celebration of Jimi Hendrix’s 76th birthday. It’s one of the odder contradictions about Jimi Hendrix: Despite being so enigmatic and galvanizing in front of a live audience, he actually hated being out on the road. In his defense, the road in the 1960s was an unforgiving and punishing place to be, especially when plotted out in advance by Hendrix’s manager, Michael Jeffery. I suppose we could have put Hendrix’s last known gig at the Isle of Fehmarn on September 6, 1970, or maybe his performance at the Isle of Wight a few weeks earlier, but both of those are kind of shambolic and more than a little morbid. Loose is the operative word when it comes to describing this concert, which took place just outside the confines of the University of California.
