Ernesto Antonio "Tito" Puente (April 20, 1923 – June 1, 2000) was an American mambo musician and Latin jazz composer. He is best known for dance-oriented mambo and Latin jazz compositions that endured over a 50-year career. He and his music appear in many films such as The Mambo Kings and Fernando Trueba's. Tito Puente was born on April 20, 1923, at Harlem Hospital Center in New York City. His family moved frequently, but he spent the majority of his childhood in the Spanish Harlem area of the city. Puente's father was the foreman at a razorblade factory.
Concord Jazz Picante release with Tito Puente and his Latin Ensemble, musicians include: Tito Puente - timbales, vibes, percussion, Jimmy Frisaura - trumpet, trombone, Mario Rivera - saxophone, Alfredo De La Fe - violin, Jerry Gonzalez - percussion, fugelhorn, Jorge Dalto - piano and others. Swinging latin jazz from some of the best. Here, Puente has brought together a great bunch of musicians, and they are all given their time in the lime-light. In the title piece "On Broadway" it is Edgardo Miranda who shines on the cuatro, and "Jo-Je-Ti" is a bad-assed descarga featuring Johnny Rodriguez on bongos, Jerry Gonzalez on congas, and of course Tito on timbales (hence Jo-Je-Ti, which is in the tradition of Ti-Mon-Bo, TiGiMo,and other percussion jams by Puente and friends.
George Shearing - Take Five, Tito Puente - Oye Como Va, Tito Puente & His Latin Ensemble feat. Phil Woods - Salsa Caliente, Tito Puente & His Latin Ensemble feat. Phil Woods - Guajira Soul, Tito Puente & His Latin Ensemble, La India - Fever и другие популярные треки и рингтоны.
The great Latin bandleader Tito Puente has long been one of the pioneers in fusing bebop with very danceable Latin music. On this Concord disc, Puente plays vibes and timbales and utilizes an 11-piece band featuring trumpeter Jimmy Frisaura, Mario Rivera on tenor, soprano and flute, pianist Jorge Dalto and an infectious rhythm section. Jazz standards (including "Sophisticated Lady," "Bluesette" and even Freddie Hubbard's "First Light") alternate with Latin numbers.
