Album · 2007 · 15 Songs. On 2006’s Pasajero, the French kings of Catalan rumba returned to the nuevo flamenco world grooves with which they first made their reputation. And while Gipsy Kings dialed the synths and studio echo back up to 10, the band also introduced a few new rhythmic tricks. A Caribbean tinge permeates many of the tracks, like the stylized horns on Cuban workout Mira la Chica or the reggae basslines of the dubby Pueblos. The biggest treat comes with their flashy take on Compay Segundo’s son classic Chan Chan, where the Kings pushed the tempo into breakneck territory. Pasajero Gipsy Kings.
It's been two years since the Gipsy Kings' masterpiece Roots, an album where they kissed big, extravagant production, as well as big drums and keyboards, goodbye. Apparently old habits are hard to break. On the cover of 2007's Pasajero, the Kings look back to the natural thang. They are posed on a picnic table in the middle of some wild grass and trees, playing together, laughing, and singing. Covers can be deceiving, and this is one of them. Pasajero is a big return to glossy sound, extravagant production, big drums, dub bass, and electronic programming and percussion.

Gipsy Kings, Pasajero. Tinto Tanta/Sony BMG). Two years ago, when they ditched their synthesisers to record the Roots album, "the world's favourite non-English speaking band" found they were back in fashion with world music fans. This new album has the same light touch, with their remarkable guitar work driven on by rousing percussion or accordion, and with just one subtle dash of brass
