In 2005 after an absence of 27 years, one of only a handful of the old school progressive rock bands worthy of the over used description, the mighty Van Der Graaf Generator, unexpectedly reformed with the classic line up and blessed the world with Present a double cd of superb noise.

Van der Graaf Generator are an English progressive rock band, formed in 1967 in Manchester by singer-songwriters Peter Hammill and Chris Judge Smith and the first act signed by Charisma Records. They did not experience much commercial success in the UK, but became popular in Italy during the 1970s. In 2005 the band reformed, and are still musically active with a line-up of Hammill, organist Hugh Banton and drummer Guy Evans.

Van Der Graaf Generator has filled my ears since 1972. I love the intricacy and phrasing of their music, the intelligence of their lyrics and the overall complexity and sophistication of this very fine Progressive Rock band. Via our Prime membership we were able to enjoy this by adding it to our Prime library. But is A Grounding in Numbers truly a VdGG album, or is it more a Peter Hammill solo one? For forty years Hammill has generally ensured that VdGG albums are quite distinct in sound and construct apart from his solo works, but on occasion the line has been blurred. This album is one of those instances. VdGG is a Prog band, meaning that their albums can be expected to feature some longer improv-based tracks, at times approaching "epic works". But this album has very short, concise songs in the manner of a Hammill solo record.
