The Modern Lovers was an American rock band led by Jonathan Richman in the 1970s and 1980s. The original band existed from 1970 to 1974 but their recordings were not released until 1976 or later. It featured Richman and bassist Ernie Brooks with drummer David Robinson (later of The Cars) and keyboardist Jerry Harrison (later of Talking Heads). The sound of the band owed a great deal to the influence of the Velvet Underground, and is now sometimes classed as "proto-punk".

After the first Modern Lovers album, Jonathan Richman's records were enjoyable but fairly spotty. Thankfully, The Beserkley Years collects the best moments from his '70s records, when his cutesiness was endearing, not irritating. With "Roadrunner," "Pablo Picasso," "Here Come the Martian Martians," "Important in Your Life," "Ice Cream Man," and "Dodge Veg-o-matic" forming its core, this collection is a definitive portrait of his goofy, catchy minimalist pop and rock.
