IMO the best Morrissey solo album. It has it all: catchy pop, meloncholic drear, lush rock. It's the climactic peak of maturity of song writing, themes and arrangement, without losing any quality. The style being more richly invested in alternative rock than indie rock, giving it a fuller, heavier feel, complementing equally deep lyrics. This album has so many hits like Youngest Was The Most Loved, I Will See You In Far Off Places, You Have Killed Me and Life Is A Pigsty, which musically sits alongside the other wonderfully depressing Morrissey anthems like Yes I Am Blind and Seaside Yet Still Docked. While we'll never get another Your Arsenal, this album is what it would see while looking at itself in the mirror after years of loss and acceptance. Carrying a certain weight of loneliness that can only be defined with age. Reply See 2 replies Notify me Helpful.
Ringleader of the Tormentors is not a bad or overtly disappointing record, and I don't want to cast it as such. But it is the work of a drifting artist content with enabling the auto-pilot and letting the cards fall as they may. The result is at times pleasant and at times slightly below board, and generally falling somewhere right in between. I think it's standard Morrissey, and has nothing special to it at all. I can't think of one song on the album that I would call 'great'. I thought You Are The Quarry was great though.
Ringleader Of The Tormentors' sees Morrissey not only in wonderful voice, but more flamboyant and alive than at any time in his solo career. was Morrissey's strongest album in years, but Ringleader reframes it as mere foreplay. 60. It's hard not to shake the suspicion that this album is the closest he's ever been to forgettable.
This being a Morrissey album, however, happiness can't last. Within seconds of Dear God, Please Help Me's slow dissolve, he is singing a song called You Have Killed Me and comparing himself to film director Pier Paolo Pasolini, who compellingly illustrated the downside of trawling the vias for a shag, when a bit of rough trade he picked up in Ostia ran him over with his own Alfa Romeo. Much of Ringleader of the Tormentors is given over to fretting about the effect that admitting sexual satisfaction - or, apparently more disastrous still, love - might have on Morrissey's image . But Ringleader of the Tormentors has a mystery and magic of its own. Topics.
Ringleader of the Tormentors concludes with the similarly symphonic At Last I Am Born, where dear Moz confesses, I once was a mess of guilt because of the flesh/It’s remarkable what you can learn. To suit this miraculous transformation, veteran glam-rock producer Tony Visconti helps Morrissey achieve the delicious sensuality of early T. Rex and David Bowie, even paraphrasing the strummed guitar intro from David Bowie’s Space Oddity midway through the epic Life Is a Pigsty

Recent graduates of Mugwumps such as Patrick Wolf and the Arctic Monkeys have had much success thanks to the teachings of all of the great art rocker professors in residence. Professor Albarn has taken to teaching How to Not Lose Your Thick British Accent When Singing while Professor Cocker imparts knowledge on How to Avoid the Sun. When Professor Yorke is seen, he can be found teaching Defense Against Common Objects in the Big Bad World. Professor Smith is in charge of, quite succinctly, Hair & Makeup for the Rock Star . Look now as Professor Bowie has called in a young bespectacled student into his office, portraits of the professor’s various looks and eras adorning the walls behind him. What’s the matter, Professor? Why pull me out of visiting Professor Pop’s class?
Ringleader of the Tormentors is a savagely alive record. It is, for instance, a far more direct and rocking record than Quarry, which aside from 'Irish Blood, English Heart', was a self-consciously beautiful, and largely symphonic, record. Ringleader of the Tormentors was written by Morrissey with Jesse Tobias, Alain Whyte and Boz Boorer. It's the truth and presented here by Morrissey in a beautiful package. Ringleader of the Tormentors.
