The Bobbettes were an American R&B girl group who had a 1957 top 10 hit song called "Mr. Lee". The group existed from 1955 to 1974 and included Jannie Pought (1945-1980), Emma Pought (born 1942), Reather Dixon (1945-2014), Laura Webb (1941-2001), and Helen Gathers (1942-2011). The group, which originally formed in East Harlem, New York, in 1955, was first known as "The Harlem Queens". The girls first met while singing at the Glee Club at . 109 in Spanish Harlem.

Here comes Mr. Lee, he's coming for me Here comes Mr. Lee, he's coming for me He's my lover boy, let's jump for joy. Come on Mr. Lee and do your stuff Come on Mr. Lee and do your stuff 'Cause you're gonna be mine till the end of time. One, two, three, hey, look at Mr. Lee Three, four, five, hey, look at him jive. Mr. Lee, Mr. Lee, oh, Mr. Lee Mr. Lee. Ah, Mr. More on Genius. But their record company told them to make the song into a loving song. A few years later, 1959, the Bobbettes produced a sequel to the song: I shot Mr. This song remained unreleased. Cover By. Lee by The Pointer Sisters. Stand by Me (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) Various Artists.

Album: Atlantic Rhythm & Blues 1947-1974, Vol. 3 (1955-1958) (1957). The first hit for the Bobbettes, this song made them the first girl group to have a R&B hit and a Top 10 American Pop hit. Written by the Bobbettes themselves, this song was inspired by a schoolteacher that the girls strongly despised. The Bobbettes' version was featured in the 1986 film Stand by Me. In 1959, the Bobbettes recorded the sequel to this song, "I Shot Mr. Lee" (which revealed what the group really felt of him) but it remained unreleased. When Atlantic released them from their contract, they signed with a small label called Triple-X, where they rerecorded it and it reached in the US. Atlantic responded to its release by releasing their original version of it.

Mr Lee. Artist: The Bobbettes. Album: Jukebox Doo-Wop, 2013. The group, which originally formed in Spanish Harlem, New York, in 1955, was first known as "The Harlem Queens". The girls actually disliked the real-life Mr. Lee and the original lyrics to the song were something of a put-down, but Atlantic insisted the group revise the lyrics before recording the song. This made the Bobbettes the first girl group to release a R&B hit that also made the pop top 10.
