Listen free to James Blackshaw – Waking into sleep - Göteborg, 2. 5. 06 (Sunshrine, celeste i and more). A warm and gentle breeze of enchantment suddenly blows through our minds and senses; it´s the music of a very beautiful human being bearing the name of James Blackshaw. Rainbows glimmer in a distance and the dandelions sing harmony. 4 original compositions for 12 string acoustic guitar by James Blackshaw, recorded live in concert in Göteborg, late may 2006. The lucky people who visited the performance all glowed merrily afterwards.

Britain’s James Blackshaw has been garnering critical accolades over the last couple of years for his minimalist guitarwork. I think it’s wrong to call him a minimalist. True, his records consist only of solo 12-string guitar pieces, but those pieces brim: notes, themes, and moods rain into the lengthy tracks until they overflow, tip over, or burst. He is not afraid of repetition, and then more repetition, but what he is repeating isn’t at all pared down: Waking into Sleep’s effusive, colorful patterns come back again and again, but to my ears, the end result is no more minimal than Panda Bear’s Person Pitch. Blackshaw rides bold, repetitive bass parts that lend an Eastern, sitar-like feel to the otherwise rustic filigree he imparts via fancy trills, slides, and picking patterns. He works over his 12 strings with authority.

Waking Into Sleep - Göteborg, 2. Celeste I. Waking Into Sleep - Göteborg, 2. A brilliant and innovative 12-string guitar player, James Blackshaw was born in 1981 in London. Another in a long string of amazing British acoustic guitar wizards, Blackshaw has been compared at various times to Bert Jansch, Davy Graham, Robbie Basho, John Fahey, Glenn Jones, Jack Rose, and Leo Kottke, among others, but his sound, often modal and based on improvising across set themes, is entirely his own. Blackshaw released several limited CD-R albums as he began his career, including 2004's Celeste and Lost Prayers and Motionless Dancers, 2005's Sunshrine, and the live Waking Into.

Summoning Suns' is James Blackshaw's tenth studio album and the first recording to feature his voice and lyrics. Drawing inspiration from 60's and 70's singer-songwriters, baroque/orchestral pop and folk music, while still sounding contemporary, 'Summoning Suns' is Blackshaw's foray into more traditional forms of songcraft. Blackshaw sings in a gentle but assured voice while his words combine his personal experiences, neuroses and fantasy through many layers of abstraction, poeticism and dark humour.
