Street Scene is an American opera by Kurt Weill (music), Langston Hughes (lyrics), and Elmer Rice (book). Written in 1946 and premiered in Philadelphia that year, Street Scene is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name by Rice. It was Weill who referred to the piece as an "American opera", intending it as a groundbreaking synthesis of European traditional opera and American musical theater.

Arrau, Abravanel, and Jolles remained members of Weill's circle of friends thereafter, and Jolles's sole surviving composition predating the rise of the Nazi regime in 1933 is a fragment of a work for four pianos he and Weill wrote jointly. The most interesting attempt in this direction is Street Scene, based on a play by Elmer Rice, with lyrics by Langston Hughes.

Anne Jeffreys, Polyna Stoska, and Brian Sullivan, all trained singers with some opera experience, led the cast, as Weill mixed sub-operatic arias and duets with a few songs that revealed jazz influences or even sounded like conventional Broadway tunes. Like Porgy and Bess, Street Scene was an attempt to have things both ways, to be treated as a "serious" work while also making money.
