After two critically acclaimed singles on Pigboy Records ('Fudge Tunnel' in 1989, 'The Sweet Sound of Excess' in 1990), they signed to Nottingham's Earache Records. Their debut album was 'Hate Songs in E Minor', which attracted a large amount of press interest after the original album artwork was confiscated by the Nottingham Vice Squad.

Fudge Tunnel were one of those rare bands who managed to disconnect themselves from all the rubbish associated with the music business. Forget the posturing and posing, the trendy genre labels, and the commercialism. Fudge Tunnel focused on nothing but the music. The rhythm section looked like a pair of trainspotters, while Alex Newport could easily have been mistaken for a floppy-haired Manchester shoegazer, or an early Grunge fan. Nondescript and unremarkable standing in a crowd, get them behind their instruments and the result is anything but unremarkable.

Fudge Tunnel ranked among them. Too heavy for grunge yet not particularly metal, they were a noisy groove machine who grew just large enough to garner some interest and attention before succumbing to the glass ceiling of an overcrowded scene. Being on a record label that didn't quite suit their material style didn't help things either. But with all the 90's nostalgia currently going on, you'd think Fudge Tunnel would be in-line for their time in the sun but so far it hasn't happened. So it's with great interest that I spin Creep Diets again. Trying to take an objective approach to an album that meant a lot to me as a teenager. And the sounds that hit me are wholly unsurprising and familiar: serrated sheet metal riffs that cut deep through rollicking grooves buoyed by a bass forward rhythm section swinging in tough strides with a subtle, jazzy touch.

Hate Songs in E Minor is the debut studio album by British rock band Fudge Tunnel, released on 20 August 1991 by Earache. It followed in the wake of two critically acclaimed singles ("Fudge Tunnel" in 1989 and "The Sweet Sound of Excess" in 1990, both on Pigboy/Winyl Solution), after which the group were signed to Earache.
