Edward "Kid" Ory (December 25, 1886 – January 23, 1973) was a Louisiana French-speaking jazz trombonist and bandleader. He was born in Woodland Plantation, near LaPlace, Louisiana. Ory started playing music with homemade instruments in his childhood, and by his teens was leading a well-regarded band in southeast Louisiana. He kept LaPlace, Louisiana, as his base of operations because of family obligations until his twenty-first birthday, when he moved his band to New Orleans.

Kid Ory's name first graced a record in 1922, when the obscure Nordskog label released his Ory's Creole Trombone, a tune he would later turn into a classic as a member of Louis Armstrong's Hot Five. Recorded in Los Angeles, this rare side also features the bassist who is heard on this album, Ed Garland, who had come to California as a member of King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band.

Dixieland, sometimes referred to as hot jazz or traditional jazz, is a style of jazz based on the music that developed in New Orleans at the start of the 20th century. One of the first uses of the term "Dixieland" with reference to music was in the name of the Original Dixieland Jass Band (which shortly thereafter changed the spelling of its name to "Original Dixieland Jazz Band"). Their 1917 recordings fostered popular awareness of this new style of music.
