Smitten is a 1998 album by Buffalo Tom. It was their only album for Polydor Records. Singer/guitarist Bill Janovitz said that, as the band members looked over demos in preparation for the album, they noticed that keyboards were taking a larger role in their songs than before. Early in the process of putting the album together, the band spent time working with t Tom Gorman, most well known as a member of Belly

The perennial bridesmaids of the modern rock scene, Buffalo Tom have been flirting with mainstream success since 1992's critically acclaimed album, "Let Me Come Over. Unfortunately, though Smitten may please devoted fans, it will do little to give them the breakthrough they have long deserved. In many ways the record follows the pattern started with Let Me Come Over and its follow-up, Big Red Letter Day - namely, alternating between a rough around the edges, feedback laden sound and a more polished studio sounding album.

THIS AMICABLE AMHERST, Massachusetts trio has had more than it's share of up's and downs. Lately downs. Being a fan of both--their first two records (co-produced by J Mascis) and the later two leaning towards pop infection (before a return to form with 1995's "Sleepy Eyed")--Smitten combines enough material for both camps to find something to like. Where "Sleepy Eyed" kept to guitar compositions and heavy handed rhythms and hollering "Smitten" adds instrumental depth to the BUFFALO TOM oeuvre, dressing up songs with a string section, horns, and samples ("Knot in it") just to keep it contemporary. Thankfully these dressings are tastefully done and greatly add to the dimension of the songs. Vocal duties are once again shared between Bill Janovitz and Chris Colbourn to refined affect. What this amounts to is a band coming closer to the new day realization that they still possess the energy and sharpness of their once found college rock sound sporting intelligent sensitivity. Time is running out tho and the room is starting to wander about.
