Although Con Funk Shun had enjoyed a chart run which had lasted nearly a decade, by 1986's Burnin' Love it was clear that the band had finally run their course. The breaking point very nearly came when founding member, Felton Pilate, quit to strike out on his own venture; although Melvin Carter quickly replaced him, the band's dynamic was indelibly altered.

Con Funk Shun quickly hired all outside producers like Attala Zane Giles, Billy Osborne, Billy Valentine, Bryan Loren (who will become a succesful producer for later Vesta Williams and Michael Jackson), and the famous McElroy and Foster team to work on their new sound of which left a bad taste in the mouths of longtime fans (not sounding anything like a Con Funk. It think Burnin' Love was much better than Electric Lady and Fever.
