Chris Robison is an American musician and songwriter. Having played in the bands Steam and Elephant's Memory he went on to release two albums in the early 1970s that were among the first to deal with explicitly gay themes. These were, "Chris Robison and His Many Hand Band" (1973) and "Manchild" (1974), both released on Gypsy Frog Records. This album, along with Steven Grossman (musician)'s Caravan Tonight (1974) and Chris Robison's Chris Robison and His Many Hand Band (1973), is one of the first to deal with openly gay themes and issues within the song lyrics.
Chris Robison and his many hand band, released privately in 1973 and reissued now on CD for the first time, was one of the world's first records by an openly gay songwriter. Coming just a few years after the stonewall riots of 1969, many hand band is a dazzling feat of musical daring. In the album's comprehensive liner notes, filled with rare photos and a frank interview with Chris, he talks of RCA records turning him down because they didn't want another 'faggot' on their roster (aside from Lou Reed and David Bowie). Meanwhile he became a poster boy for the burgeoning gay lib movement, playing Washington square park with Bette Midler in front of thousands in 1973. The former has been released on CD by Chapter Music.
A newer site, a couple of months old, put together by friend Robert Fromberg for my little band, STUMBLEBUNNY! I started Stumblebunny after my year with The New York Dolls and Japan tour- in 2010 we did Max's Kansas City Reunion and had such fun we are playing again! just back from a festival we played in San Jose, California// this site features our Polygram International album released in Holland and Germany and the self produced .
After Robison’s open declarations of his sexuality proved too strong for record companies at a time when even Elton John had yet to come out, he hired a run-down studio and recorded his songs, playing everything himself and overdubbing choral vocals like a low-rent Brian Wilson. Released on his tiny Gypsy Frog label, this album was destined for cult obscurity but now reappears as an enjoyable snapshot of another, once taboo, side of 70s New York life. The former has been released on CD by Chapter.
