Black is beautiful is a cultural movement that was started in the United States in the 1960s by African Americans. It later spread beyond the United States, most prominently in the writings of the Black Consciousness Movement of Steve Biko in South Africa. Black is beautiful got its roots from the Négritude movement of the 1930s. Negritude argued for the importance of a Pan-African racial identity among people of African descent worldwide.

The second album, Black is the Color, was recorded a year later and is more given over to the electric jazz fusion sound of the day. It, however, lacks the dynamic soloing partners Joe has on the first album, and is rather more percussion-heavy, with Jack DeJohnette joined by Airto Moreira and Ralph McDonald. The standout tracks here are the title track and the opening "Terra Firma," which establishes a heavy Milesian electric groove over which Henderson solos with as much imagination and sheer power as ever, and a surprising tendency to multiphonic extremes.

If, in the late Fifties and early Sixties, you were drawn to that place on the AM radio dial where the rhythms, the grooves and the beautiful sounds of African-American soul were playing, you would have found Curtis Mayfield. Many of us first heard him as backing vocalist in the Impressions behind Jerry Butler, singing "For Your Precious Love. Guns n' Roses revived our kind of rock. I keep it on my black velvet top hat. It goes with me everywhere. It's probably the most beautiful piece of jewelry a man has ever given me, ever. It was recorded after he was shot and spent time in prison. It was like a doctor told him he was going to die, and he was trying to get it all down on paper.
