Rocky Mountain High is the sixth studio album released by American singer-songwriter John Denver in September, 1972. It was his first US Top 10 album (no. 4), propelled by the single "Rocky Mountain High", and in addition reached no. 11 in the UK. The album's cover photograph was taken at Slaughterhouse Falls, Rio Grande Trail, Aspen, Colorado. John Denver – 6 & 12-string acoustic guitars, vocals, arrangements. Gary Chester – drums, percussion. Eric Weissberg – banjo, steel guitar.
Considered by producer Phil Spector to be his best work, the single was successful in Europe, peaking at number 3 in the United Kingdom, and peaking at number 16 in Australia although it flopped on its original release in the United States
My song "Rocky Mountain High" was banned from many radio stations as a drug-related song. It paints a picture of the beautiful mountain scenery and the song is so naturalistic. Even better, Denver wrote the song from a personal experience, in part about he and his wife Annie moving to Aspen and enjoying the beauty of the Rockies. As a writer myself, I feel that personal experiences are the best things to write about.
Whisp’ring faint murmurs to the scanty breeze, I walk the village round; if at her side. And throw all pity on the burning air; I’d curse bright fortune for my mixèd lot, And then I’d die in peace and be forgot. 20. Contents · Bibliographic Record.
But the Colorado rocky mountain high I've seen it rainin' fire in the sky The shadow from the starlight is softer than a lullabye Rocky mountain high (Colorado). He climbed cathedral mountains, he saw silver clouds below He saw everything as far as you can see And they say that he got crazy once and he tried to touch the sun And he lost a friend but kept his memory. Now he walks in quiet solitude the forest and the streams Seeking grace in every step he takes His sight has turned inside himself to try and understand The serenity of a clear blue mountain lake
And Ronnie ran that band with an iron hand. I have never seen such internal discipline in a band. One example: These guys composed all of their guitar solos. Most bands improvised solos each time they performed or recorded. We got to know the Yardbirds because they played at Staples High School in Westport, Connecticut, in 1966. We had a friend, Henry Smith, who had been our manager for a while, and he had gone to school there. I have never seen another man who could make hardened old waitresses at the Palomino Club in Los Angeles shed tears the way he did. It was all in the man. I miss him so.
