Ludwig van Beethoven composed his Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61, in 1806. Its first performance by Franz Clement was unsuccessful and for some decades the work languished in obscurity, until revived in 1844 by Joseph Joachim. Since then it has become one of the best-known violin concertos. Beethoven had previously written a number of pieces for violin and orchestra.

When Soviet violinist David Oistrakh performed at the reopening of the Unter den Linden Theater in September 1955, the event was as much political as artistic. The Unter den Linden, East Berlin's opera house, had been closed since the war, and having the Soviet Union's most famous violinist appear there, before his first appearances in the United States since before the war, was touted as a political triumph for the East German government. Above and beyond being a citizen of the USSR, Oistrakh was a consummate artist, and his playing of Beethoven's Violin Concerto here is at the highest possible level of virtuosity and inspiration. As accompanied by Franz Konwitschny leading the Staatskapelle Berlin, Oistrakh's performance is lyrical, ineffable, and wholly transcendent of the time and place of recording.
