This Linn release was recorded in the fall of 2015, before the death of Peter Maxwell Davies the following spring. It's not clear whether it was intended as a tribute to the still-active composer, who was suffering from a terminal illness, but it would serve perfectly well as one, at least for the less brash final phase of Maxwell Davies' career.

The Scottish Chamber Orchestra (SCO) is an Edinburgh-based UK chamber orchestra. One of Scotland's five National Performing Arts Companies, the SCO performs throughout Scotland, including annual tours of the Scottish Highlands and Islands and South of Scotland. The SCO appears regularly at the Edinburgh, East Neuk, St Magnus and Aldeburgh Festivals and The Proms. The SCO's international touring receives support from the Scottish Government. The SCO rehearses mainly at Edinburgh's Queen's Hall.

Album · 2016 · 9 Songs. Ben Gernon & Scottish Chamber Orchestra.

Peter Maxwell Davies. Sean Shibe (guitar), Scottish Chamber Orchestra/Gernon (Linn). This disc by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra was not planned as a tribute to Peter Maxwell Davies, who died in March after it was recorded, but it makes a worthy and deeply felt portrait of Max’s Orkney. The ebullient and famous Orkney Wedding provides the title track, and the real discovery is Ebb of Winter from 2013, a vivid overture conjuring the wild spaces and often bleak weather of the islands that Max loved, with a wonderful openness and transparency in the orchestration.

The Scottish Chamber Orchestra was a major vehicle of inspiration for Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, who died earlier this year. In turn, it has produced some of the finest insights into his, at times, difficult music. A tribute album, it opens with Ebb of Winter, a piece composed for the orchestra's recent 40th birthday. It's a work representative of the lighter, softer, more translucent Max of his later years. Ben Gernon conducts a performance that glistens with crystal clear textures and those mysterious Orkney soundscapes.

Peter Maxwell Davies (1934-2016) loved Orkney. Having been captivated by his first visit there in 1970, he soon afterwards settled on Hoy, and became one of the founding fathers of the St. Magnus Festival in 1977. It is clear that, from this time on, the Orkney landscape, with its ever-changing weather conditions and seasons, became the lifeblood flowing through Davies's music - not only the more programmatic pieces such as Orkney Wedding With Sunrise and Farewell to Stromness, but also through his abstract symphonies. Perhaps the best-known piece on this disc is 'Orkney Wedding With Sunrise'.
