Peter Maxwell Davies's 1982 Sinfonia Concertante, with its solo wind quintet and timpani, is one of those enviably fluent but ultimately rather bland products of his long association with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. The Sinfonia, however, is a rather more intriguing work. It was composed in 1962, when the young Maxwell Davies was immersed in the music of Monteverdi, and was one of three major works that he based on procedures in the 1610 Vespers

Sir Peter Maxwell Davies CH CBE (8 September 1934 – 14 March 2016) was an English composer and conductor. In 2004 he was made Master of the Queen's Music. As a student at both the University of Manchester and at the Royal Manchester College of Music, he formed a group dedicated to contemporary music, the New Music Manchester, with fellow students Harrison Birtwistle, Alexander Goehr, Elgar Howarth and John Ogdon

Two excellent compositions of Maxwell Davies, both from 1983, and the two pendants of a triptych of works for chamber orchestra composed in 1982/3, the other one being the Sinfonia Concertante (recorded on Maxwell Davies: Sinfonia Concertante (1982), Sinfonia (1962)). MD was born in Manchester but in 1971 became an Orcadian (inhabitant of the Orkney, the islands north of Scotland where the North Sea meets the Atlantic), and an even more than the natives. It is not just that "Into the Labyrinth" was written for and is performed here by Scottish tenor Neil Mackie who also sang and recorded those Britten cycles (see Neil Mackie Sings Britten - Serenade for Tenor, Horn & Strings) and has the ideal Britten timbre (less nasal than Peter Pears'), and not only because the Cantata is filled, uncommonly for Maxwell.

After his move to Orkney, Davies often drew on Orcadian or more generally Scottish themes in his music, and has sometimes set the words of Orcadian writer George Mackay Brown. He has written a number of other operas, including The Martyrdom of St Magnus (1976), The Lighthouse (1980, his most popular opera), and The Doctor of Myddfai (1996). his association with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, 1987–1996). In 2002, he began work on a series of string quartets for the Maggini String Quartet to record on Naxos Records (the Naxos Quartets)

As Davies himself has made clear, the Sinfonia is one of his homages to Monteverdi, while the sleeve-note to this record explains that the much more recent Sinfonia Concertante, as both words in its title imply, reflects a preoccupation with certain aspects of classical form and texture. These 'models' are not immediately audible in either piece, and although analogies rather than quotations do become apparent on a second or third hearing, it would be a pity to think that spotting them is the 'point' of each work or even a necessity if they are to be enjoyed.
