The Odyssey is the sixth studio album by progressive metal band Symphony X, released on November 5, 2002 through Inside Out Music. The album is the band's first to be recorded entirely at guitarist Michael Romeo's home studio, The Dungeon. Accolade II" is a sequel to "The Accolade" from The Divine Wings of Tragedy (1997). The title track is the album's grand finale: a 24-minute musical interpretation of Homer's Odyssey, an epic poem about the journey of ancient Greek hero Odysseus.

The sixth album of Symphony X is a very special one. In addition to maintaining the progressive and neoclassical roots of the band, The Odyssey marks the beginning of a continuing transition towards a heavier sound that will gain a wider audience for the band. Besides that, the twenty four minutes title track is one of the most ambitious songs written in the genre, and by itself justify the purchasing of this great album. The most outstanding track in this album is the title track. The Odyssey is musical interpretation of an ancient Greek poem that follows the story of Odysseus and his journey home after the fall of Troy. It's a twenty four minutes long epic adventure that is divided into seven different parts. The first part is an instrumental overture with tons of orchestrations that could fit easily in one of Walt Disney 90's classics movies.

Where's the symphony? An ambitious project for Symphony X, "The Odyssey" sees the band experimenting further with the progressive side of metal. Founded in 1994, New Jersey progressive symphonic metal veterans Symphony X have consistently released one excellent album after another. Crunchy riff driven songs with a more aggressive vocal style, just what the progressive symphonic metal fan was looking for. Well, that's maybe not quite right.
