Closer is the second and final studio album by English rock band Joy Division, released on 18 July 1980 by Factory Records. Produced by Martin Hannett, it was Joy Division's first posthumous album and was released two months after the suicide of the band's lead singer and lyricist Ian Curtis. It sounds generally more mature and Joy-Division-ish. While Unknown Pleasures seemed to be Joy Division finding their identity, in Closer they are entirely certain of who they are. The songs are slower and gloomier, and the punk influence isn’t discernible anymore. The lyrics, while not always understandable, all seem to come from the same mood of quiet but growing desperation. Which album is better? I would say that Unknown Pleasures has more great songs, but Closer is a better album. The great songs on Unknown Pleasures are interspersed with scrappy or under-formed ones.
