Thick as a Brick is the fifth studio album by the British rock band Jethro Tull, released in March 1972. The album contains a continuous piece of music, split over two sides of an LP record, and is a parody of the concept album genre. The original packaging, designed like a newspaper, claims the album to be a musical adaptation of an epic poem by fictional eight-year-old genius Gerald Bostock, though the lyrics were actually written by the band's frontman, Ian Anderson.

Thick as a Brick is perhaps Jethro Tull’s definitive progressive rock album. The lyrical incohesiveness, far greater than Aqualung, leads Craig Thomas, who penned Tull’s 25th Anniversary Set booklet, to seriously question whether it is properly deemed a concept album. Rather, he views it more of an adaptation of the kind of free-jaz. mprovisations of the 1960. Indeed, several segments were recorded in just one improvisional take.

Jethro Tull's first LP-length epic is a masterpiece in the annals of progressive rock, and one of the few works of its kind that still holds up decades later. Mixing hard rock and English folk music with classical influences, set to ess lyrics so dense with imagery that one might spend weeks pondering their meaning - assuming one feels the need to do so - the group created a dazzling tour de force, at once playful, profound, and challenging, without overwhelming the listener.

Jethro Tull wasn't the first to use the newspaper theme for album art: The Four Seasons 1969 album Genuine Imitation Life Gazette was made to look like a newspaper with lyrics to the songs appearing as stories. It even had a comics-section insert. In 2012, Ian Anderson released a sequel called Thick As A Brick 2 - Whatever Happened To Gerald Bostock? The album presents various outcomes for the now 48-year-old Bostock, including banker, preacher, soldier, and shop owner.

Like so much flounder, Thick As A Brick comes wrapped in the St. Cleve’s Chronicle, an apocryphal yet typical daily of Anderson’s design. Played across the front page is the Gerald Little Milton Bostock scandal (the epithet refers to the author of Paradise Lost, not the soul singer). Eight-year-old Gerald is adjudged unfit to accept first prize from The Society For Literary Advancement And Gestation (SLAG) by virtue of the questionable contents of his epic poem Thick As A Brick. Gerald is one of Ian Anderson’s incarnations and ruses. What marks this album as a significant departure from other Jethro Tull work, and rock in general, is the organization of all its music into one continuous track. Albums like Sgt. Pepper or Tommy were complete entities in themselves, but still chose to use songs as their basic components. While sections of Thick As A Brick are melodically distinct, they all inherently relate to each other.
