The Pogues discography. This is the discography for Irish Folk/Punk band The Pogues. "-" denotes an album that did not chart or was not released. The Pogues in Paris: 30th Anniversary Concert at the Olympia. Label: Formats: CD, LP, digital download. The Pogues Live with Joe Strummer 1991.
In reality, the Pogues were no more authentic than the artists they were supposed to oppose. Hailing from such far-flung corners of the Emerald Isle as Eastbourne, Stoke-On-Trent and Salford, the band's members nevertheless dressed up, as frontman Shane MacGowan put it, in clothes that were equal parts "Brendan Behan and typical Irish granddad". The arrival of acid house in Britain made an impression on a number of artists, but its impact on the Pogues may have been the most dramatic of all. It didn't affect their music directly, although you can hear a weird faint echo of its sound in the grinding, hallucinatory USA, from 1989's Peace and Love.
Red Roses For Me' uses the 2013 remix from the original multi-track tapes by Nick Robbins. Peace and Love' uses the 2013 remix from the original multi-track tapes by legendary producer Steve Lillywhite.
The most comprehensive collection of Pogues material to date, 30:30 - The Essential Collection arrived on the heels of the band's 30th anniversary. Comprised of material culled from 1984 to 1996 and representing each of the group's seven studio albums, the two-disc set offers up a winning mix of bona fide classics ("If I Should Fall from Grace with God," "A Pair of Brown Eyes," the contemporary Christmas standard "Fairytale of New York," and its less yuletide-centric kissing cousin "A Rainy.
The Pogues celebrated their 30th anniversary with two sold-out shows in September 2012 at the famous Olympia venue in Paris. The performances were filmed/recorded and directed by Gautier & Leduc. The shows featured the full band line-up of MacGowan, Spider Stacey, Jem Finer, James Fearnley, Andrew Ranken, Phillip Chevron, Terry Woods and Darryl Hunt. The 30th Anniversary Concert is the best compellation of the Pouges best songs and they were performed wonderfully live. This is a better disk than the Best of the Pouges CD, in number of songs and it is a double album to boot.
These performances never surrender to the anxiety of influence: All those comparisons are mere reference points for a loose aesthetic that values sustained chordal vamps above all else. Vernon’s voice - delicately layered and yearning - gives standouts Skinny Love and Flume their stunningly direct emotional impact, but his sturdy folk chords, earthy melodies, and plainspoken, pastoral lyrics prevent the album from descending into self-pity.
For 30 years the bells have been ringing out for one of our favourite Christmas songs. Ironically, it is anything but warm and fuzzy. We all know the lyrics to the beloved Fairytale of New York, but how much do you know about the song and its legacy? I wasn’t thinking about Fairytale, I was just wishing I could stop feeling ill!
