His main instrument is the Brazilian seven-stringed classical guitar. His guitar studies began when he was 7, tutored by his father, Algacir Costa, leader of the "Fronteiriços", a regional band. Later he sought to perfect his technique with Argentine virtuoso Lucio Yanel, who had at the time set his home in Brazil.
