Giant Sand, originally The Giant Sandworms, is an American rock band formed in 1985, based in Tucson, Arizona, USA (although Los Angeles, California was its home for many years). Overseen by itarist-pianist Howe Gelb, its membership has shifted over the years – at times with each album – though for a long while the drum and bass duties were handled by John Convertino and Joey Burns, who went on to form Calexico. the Map. 25,720 listeners.

Giant Sand (also currently recording as Giant Giant Sand) is an American band from Tucson, Arizona. Its most constant member is singer-songwriter Howe Gelb. Giant Sand's trademark sound fell into place with 1988's The Love Songs, while 1995's Glum and 2002's Chore of Enchantment captured Gelb and company at the peak of their abilities. While Gelb retired Giant Sand in 2016, he brought the concept back in the summer of 2018 with the album Returns to the Valley of Rain. The Giant Sand story began when Howe Gelb formed the four-piece Giant Sandworms after relocating to Tucson, Arizona in the mid-'70s. That was followed by the all-covers Cover Magazine in 2002 and a new studio album called All Over the Map in 2004. In comparison to the previous few Giant Sand records, Purge and Slouch was an exercise in recording almost for the heck of it, with a loose lineup of eight other performers, with Rainer Ptacek again back in the fold for a bit, assisting the s trio. The liner notes explain the casual nature of the whole thing, which was in fact recorded in the living room, guest bedroom, and porch of one Harvey Moltz, who helped record it all. Gelb himself sounded bemused at the end results, but, taking it as it is, Purge and Slouch is a fun treat; a lengthy release (nearly a full CD's.
