Rock of ages, rock of ages Still rollin', keep a-rollin' Rock of ages, rock of ages Still rollin', rock 'n' rollin'

Def Leppard, more so than most bands, paid a steep price for their fast living. In 1984 their drummer Rick Allen lost an arm after losing control after racing his Corvette on a dangerous stretch of road near Sheffield, England. Lead singer Joe Elliott and guitarist Phil Collen stayed sober from this point forward, but their other guitarist, Steve Clark, couldn't shake his additions and died from an overdose of prescription drugs in 1991. The band had the music written for this song, but were having trouble coming up with lyrics  . Said Elliott: "We'd have never written 'Rock Of Ages' if we hadn't have heard 'I Love Rock And Roll' by Joan Jett. But we didn't steal her entire sound. We took that one song and thought, 'This is very anthemic.

Many of us were disappointed by Def Leppard’s debut album in 1980, On Through The Night, but then blown away as each of the next three proved stronger than the one before. Even now, only a fool would cheapen such gold-plated received wisdom with revisionist thinking. Rock! (Till You Drop), the first of six from Pyromania, it hurtles through the best of the first two albums and ends with Brian May joining them on stage for Creedence’s Travelin’ Band. At 71 minutes it’s five shorter than Lizzy’s Live And Dangerous, yet every bit as powerful.

Rock of Ages" is a song by Def Leppard from their 1983 album Pyromania. It takes its name from the hymn "Rock of Ages". When released as a single in the United States, the song reached number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and number one on the Top Tracks rock chart. It begins with a German-like nonsense phrase, "Gunter glieben glauten globen", which was later sampled in "Pretty Fly (for a White Guy)" by the Offspring as well as "Call Me What You Like (If You Like Rock-N-Roll)" by Puffy AmiYumi. It's actually just German sounding gibberish, said by producer Mutt Lange during one of the later takes of the song.
