The Beatles' rooftop concert was the final public performance of the English rock band the Beatles. On 30 January 1969, the band, with keyboardist Billy Preston, surprised a central London office and fashion district with an impromptu concert from the roof of the headquarters of the band's multimedia corporation Apple Corps at 3 Savile Row. In a 42-minute set, the Beatles played nine takes of five songs before the Metropolitan Police asked them to reduce the volume
The album was recorded over nine non-consecutive days, between January and June 1964. In between the sporadic sessions The Beatles fulfilled their touring and filming commitments, with John Lennon and Paul McCartney writing some of their strongest songs to date. What's more, The Beatles refused to take the easy option and delve into their Cavern Club-era songbook, selecting some of the numerous cover versions in their repertoire to pad out the original compositions .
First issued on 26th September, 1969 Abbey Road was the final Beatles album to be recorded but not their last to be released. Let It Be, though mainly recorded in January, 1969 was finally released in May, 1970 alongside the film of the same name. Following the 'live' nature of the "Let It Be" recordings, for Abbey Road, The Beatles returned to the North London studios to create carefully crafted recordings with ambitious musical arrangements. For the first time on a Beatles album, the front cover contained neither the group's name nor the album title just that iconic photograph taken on the zebra crossing near the entrance to the studios in London NW8 in August 1969. Abbey Road entered the British album chart at n. in October and stayed there for a total of seventeen of its 81 weeks in the chart. In the US, it spent eleven weeks at during its initial chart stay of 83 weeks.

The Beatles in EMI Studio Two, circa 1969. With these phone calls made, the official sessions for what became the "Abbey Road" album began on July 1st, 1969. However, The Beatles had been busy in the studio, mostly with producer Chris Thomas, as early as February 22nd recording tracks that eventually found a home on the album, songs such as "I Want You (She's So Heavy)," "Oh! Darling," "Octopus's Garden" and "Something" being among them. The Beatles waiting to cross Abbey Road, August 8th, 1969. Cover Art. "While we were in the studio," Paul explains in the "Beatles Anthology" book, "our engineer Geoff Emerick always used to smoke cigarettes called 'Everest,' so the album was going to be called 'Everest.
Arguably, the most recognisable album cover in pop music history and certainly the most parodied, The Beatles’ Abbey Road album still draws fans to the road forty four years after the photo was taken. But how did this iconic image come about? We put on our sleuthing hats to find out. The result of this detective work, eleven little known nuggets of knowledge and five fantastic behind the scenes photos. 1. The album’s working title was Everest, named after the cigarettes that sound engineer Geoff Emerick smoked. This action became one of the ‘clues’ in the Paul Is Dead myth, which began in September 1969. 6. During shots 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 the group were walking out of step. However, the fifth shot was perfect, and it was this, which was selected by Paul McCartney for the album. 7. It’s the only original UK Beatles album sleeve to show neither the artist name nor the album title on its front cover.
